Golf 101: Learn the Basics

Frequently Asked Questions

When Golf is “Their” Thing it looks pretty intimidating, so we’re here to help Make Golf Your Thing by answering a few frequently asked golf questions that might be bouncing around in your head.

“A friend asked me to go play, what’s the dress code for playing golf? Can I wear jeans? What about shorts?”
    • Great question. It depends on where you’re heading out to play. Your best bet is to ask your friend where you’re playing and what their dress code is. You can also look up the dress code on their website or call the pro shop — They’ll always be happy to help.
“Golf seems expensive. How do I find affordable places to play in my area?”
    • Prices can vary widely between different courses and ranges so it’s best to do some research to locate affordable tee times and range deals to find the perfect spot. You can search online, call the pro shop or even use an app to book your time. Pro Tip: “Twilight rates” will save you a ton of money if your schedule allows for you to play late in the day, but you might not finish your round before dark. Weekends tend to be the most expensive time to play— so plan accordingly.
“Do I need my own clubs to get started?”
    • Most driving ranges and golf courses have rental sets on the ready for you to borrow, and if you catch the golf bug, there are tons of brick and mortar and online golf stores to make that first purchase an affordable one. Not all the clubs are the same so it’s recommended to get professionally fitted for your clubs.
“Golf jargon is confusing. Is there a place where I can learn how to ‘talk golf’?
    • Of course. After you tackle the what should I wear question, it only makes sense to think about what to say. The PGA’s Golf Dictionary and Glossary is a great spot to start learning.
“Am I going to be welcome?”
    • Yes!!! Trying anything new can be intimidating and golf even more so with all of its history and etiquette. But don’t worry, there are many people who are happy to help you learn the game so feel free to ask all the questions you have. The golf industry is working hard to ensure that golf is welcoming to all and is inclusive, diverse and equitable.
